BUDGERIGAR
CARE & INFORMATION
DIET
Budgies are omnivores. This means they can digest both vegetables and insects. In their natural habitat, they have a varied diet of grass seeds, leafs, and insects. It's important to keep them healthy, staying close to their natural diet. A tamed Budgie, much like its counterpart in the wild, is very curious and will try anything it's offered. Therefore, it's up to you, the owner, to offer the little bird a healthy and balanced meal.
CAGE SIZE The standard minimum cage size recommended by bird professionals is 12- by 18- by 18-inches for a single Budgie. This cage size is fine if your budgie is outside of the cage most of the time, but if you have a cage-confined Budgie, it's going to be much too small to keep your bird happy and healthy. For two budgies, 39- by 20- by 32-inches is the recommended size. The bars of the cage should be horizontal and spaced no more than 1/2-inch apart. Wider than this and the Budgie could get stuck trying to escape. HEALTH The Budgie should be wormed every three months. Do so by using Avitrol Plus bird wormer. The budgie’s toenails may overgrow and they must be clipped. If left they will be uncomfortable for the bird and may caught in the cage wire. When clipping ensure that you do not cut the blood vein that runs into the nail. CLIPPING THE WINGS When clipping the wing cut only 4 or 5 of the flight feathers, this is enough to keep most birds off balance when flying. Some birds with clipped wings can counter balance and still fly. Ensure the bird is out of harms way, away from other pets and not under foot as it will not be able to fly from danger. |
